The Alternate Side Weekend Report : Mar 26-29

Sure, Texas has their pecan pies, ten gallon hats, and acclaimed music festivals, but SXSW couldn’t keep our bands away for long! The best bands around are back in NYC this weekend and ready for action, no doubt sporting their new cowboy boots that seem to be ever so popular with musicians. Sorry TX, but you’re not the only place where the stars at night are big and bright.

Local Band of the Week: Low Water

If you've been listening to The Alternate Side over the past couple of months while slacking in your cubicle, you may have heard the music of Low Water. The band is based out of Brooklyn (shocking, I know), and recently released a new album called "Twisting The Neck Of The Swan." They have a sound that has been compared to The Replacements and Elvis Costello. We hear a Wilco influence in their music as well.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Black 47 Pt. 2

If you're looking for plans this St. Patrick's Day, consider checking out Black 47 live at BB Kings. They go on around 7PM. In a time when many disposable, pretentious bands come and go in the New York City music scene, Black 47's music remains as real as ever, and their message is as important today as it was in 1989.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Black 47 Pt. 1

Happy St. Patrick's Day! A holiday dedicated to celebrating Saint Patrick, one of the patron saints of Ireland. Did you know the very first St. Patrick's Day parade was held in Boston back in 1761? New York's first parade was one year later in 1762. Now there are hundreds of parades throughout the country every year, giving folks all across the USofA a reason to partake in drunken debauchery without guilt. We're kidding of course. We all know that the history and tradition of St. Patrick and Ireland is of the utmost importance for most people on this day. Just don't tell that to the obnoxious drunks on the LIRR tonight. Anyway...

The Alternate Side Weekend Update : Mar 12-15

The Watchmen Disclaimer:::: New York City always seems to need those masked vigilantes to keep the streets safe and uphold justice for the good of us civilians. Could you imagine what would happen to NYC without these super heroes? Arch nemesis, Top 40, would surely take over the city and claim the Bowery Ballroom as his evil headquarters! Thank goodness for the newly formed League of Good Musicians; no one stands a chance against the extraordinary powers and abilities of the members of the LGM that are protecting the masses this weekend.

Nat King Cole Re:Generations

The music of Nat King Cole is often playing throughout the WFUV/Alternate Side offices thanks to WFUV Music Director Rita Houston - who happens to be a superfan. Rita was a bit skeptical of this new project at first, but we've heard it blaring from her office speakers more than a few times over the last week, so we think she digs it.

Dan Auerbach Review: MHOW

Dan Auerbach is amazing. I'm a huge fan of The Black Keys and love his new solo album "Keep It Hid," but to see him live is an unparalleled experience. I saw him at Music Hall of Williamsburg last Monday Monday and he rocked...so hard. I have to say that the Dan Auerbach solo show was even more intense than the Keys show I saw a couple weeks ago.

Review: David Byrne At Radio City

Over the weekend, I found myself with some unexpected last minute tickets to go see David Byrne at Carnegie Hall. As soon as I walked in the lights had already gone down and David Byrne and company had taken the stage. It was dark in the theater and everyone on stage was dressed completely in white. DB even had a white guitar. Damn he's cool. Amazingly, I kept walking closer and closer to the stage looking for my row. I really lucked out with my seats. I was so close! And I asked myself, My God. How did I get here?!
