Win Tickets Here For Wild Beasts, El Perro Del Mar, Taken By Trees, Akron/Famiy And The Radio Happy Hour With Jolie Holland

Hurry and enter now to win tickets - the deadline on The Radio Happy Hour and El Perro Del Mar and Taken By Trees is this Friday.

The Radio Happy Hour isn't a group; it's a variety show based on the old-time tradition of radio dramas, entertainment and comedy, sort of like The Grand Old Opry meets A Prairie Home Companion with a contemporary twist (you can check out free downloads of past shows on iTunes). Hosted by Sam Osterhaut, this quirky nod to days gone by lassoes in a bevy of cool writers, actors, musicians and comedians. On February 13, special guests include alt-country folkster Jolie Holland (Tom Waits is a fan) and SNL writer and comic Jessi Klein.

One of the most beautiful and overlooked albums of 2006 was El Perro Del Mar's self-titled sophomore release. The Swedish singer-songwriter, real name Sarah Assbring, might have a fragile, lo-fi streak, but her songs are tough, funny and wise. Her latest album, 2009's Love Is Not Pop, has garnered her the unlikely sobriquet of the Swedish Sade in some odd corners, but Assbring is a tad more prickly, eccentric and rock 'n' roll than that. She's been touring with Taken By Trees, which is the solo project of Victoria Bergsman, former frontwoman of the Concretes. You can catch these talented ladies at Le Poisson Rouge on February 16.

The sophomore album from England's Wild Beasts, Two Dancers, topped a lot of critics' best-of-2009 polls for good reason. There may be no other rock frontman who sounds quite like Hayden Thorpe, whose explosive, countertenor howl is thrilling and absolutely unnerving. Couple that with passionately-penned songs that shred at social injustices and other transgressions and you've got the makings of a remarkable, charismatic cult band that deserves mainstream status, pronto. And yes, they're coming to Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 28 and if you don't win tickets here, buy them.

Improvisational, laid-back, progressive folksters Akron/Family, who released Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free last year on Dead Oceans, are known for their seemingly off-the-cuff but deceptively crafted live sets and genial, inspired collaborations with tourmates like Megafaun and Slaraffenland. Their adopted-hometown gig on March 3 at Music Hall of Williamsburg will be the last show on their U.S. tour, so expect some special surprises and the flexing of psych-folkie muscles.
