Who Dat Band? Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear Score In Superbowl Ads
Aside from the New Orleans Saints' miracle in Miami (which even inspired Prince to tweet his approval), David Letterman's bit of fifteen-second brilliance, and The Who's grizzled, good-natured, but predictable medley of halftime hits, one of the nicer Superbowl surprises was to hear Arcade Fire and Grizzly Bear added to the commercial mix.
Arcade Fire's decision to lend "Wake Up" from 2004's Funeral to the NFL's own slow-motion, 60-second advertisement was entirely altruistic; all proceeds from the undoubtedly impressive licensing fees went to Haitian relief, specifically to Partners in Health.
And Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks" from last year's Veckatimest was used fetchingly in Volkswagon's Jetta commercial, which also featured Stevie Wonder mysteriously playing "slug bug" with Tracy Morgan.
